Pharrell Williams Banks on Prefab Housing Project

Grammy-Award winning musician Pharrell Williams is partnering with an acclaimed New York architect on a potential major housing development in Detroit. Residents in North Corktown say a swath of city-owned empty land is the possible location. The project is being described as a working plan that has not yet secured the necessary land or city permission to make the project reality. Williams and the Detroit project were mentioned in the December edition of Architectural Digest magazine. It’s part of a brief profile of Alexander Gorlin, whom the publication recognized as among the top 100 architects and designers working today. Here is what Gorlin said about his current projects: “Teaming with musician Pharrell Williams on prefab housing in Detroit.” The term “prefab” is short for prefabricated housing, a broad term referring to any home that has sections of the structure built in a factory and then assembled on site. Telephone calls and emails to Gorlin’s Manhattan office and Williams’ publicist on Friday were not returned. Some in North Corktown have...

Finding the Perfect Prefab Floor Plan

Finding the Right Fit While just about any floor plan that can be built by conventional stick built means can be built using modular construction, having a house plan that is drawn up with modular building in mind will usually allow for less expensive and more efficient construction. If you want to start designing with modular in mind, you can start with a standard home floor plan (browse our database) and make alterations from there. The changes don’t have to be small either. We’re not just talking about moving a window here or there. It is absolutely possible – and very common – to rearrange rooms, add features, or even add entire floors to a standard home plan. A modular house plan is like a set of Legos. Sure, you can build what’s in the instructions, but you’re also free to mix and match, make changes, and create anything your heart desires. How To Build A Self Sufficient Modular Home

Build a modular home that is entirely self-sufficient by providing your own electricity, heating and cooling, water, and waste removal systems. Whether you’re eco-friendly, geographically isolated, a doomsday prepper, or you just don’t like paying utility bills, building a self-sufficient modular home is a great way to stay green, stay isolated, stay prepared, or stay thrifty. Fortunately, the same methods that are used by you die-hards can also help the average modular homeowner. There are four primary needs that need to be met for any home to be considered Self-Sufficient: Generating electricity, heating and/or cooling the home, access to fresh water, and a waste disposal system. Electricity For the Everyday: Solar Panels can be attached to the roof of your home or they can be free standing in an open area. In some areas, it is even possible to have a company install solar panels on your home for free, though you will then be purchasing the electricity directly from them (albeit at a lower price than you’re probably...

Why Modular Construction Really IS Faster

See the difference between the construction timeline for a site-built home and a modular home and learn why modular building gets the project finished faster. You’ve probably heard all about how building modular homes is faster, but is it really? Yes, yes it is. Let’s find out why. Take a look at the image below: This diagram shows us a side-by-side comparison of a timeline for a site-built home vs. a timeline for a modular home. You’ll notice that the first two stages of construction are the same. Designing and engineering a modular home would be significantly faster if you decide to build a standard modular floor plan that your builder and manufacturer are already familiar with or have built in the past. But, in the spirit of fairness, we assume that you’re building a completely custom modular home, so designing and engineering will take the same amount of time for modular as for site-built. If you chose to build a standard plan, or even modify an existing plan, the...

Los Angeles Modular Gets Rave Review

Los Angeles Modular Gets Rave Review

Dear Todd & Abe, Building my new dream home on a difficult and a challenging site, was a real problem for me and my wife, until we came across USModular Inc, from the word “go” we were dealing with a team of forward thinking, motivated and a professional team. Being a pilot employed overseas there are additional issues associated with keeping tab on all the progress associated with building a new home, therefore in absence of personal presence on site, we needed absolutely confidence with an organization that was willing to take on the task of fulfilling our dream, without having to deal with the dreaded experience and horror stories of other families. Discussions and negotiations about our project with USModular has assured us of the delivery of the quality and given us a peace of mind to go ahead with the construction in full confidence of the final outcome. Abe & Todd and their entire team have always made themselves available for consultations and explanation as and...
